Severn House has acquired When Women Were Wolves: an epic feminist fantasy novel by British author, Menna van Praag.
Laurie Johnson acquired world English-language rights, from Laurie Robertson at Peters Fraser and Dunlop Literary Agency, in a one-book deal. The book will be launched globally in hardcover and e-book in the fall of 2026.
The story follows Meda, a young woman living in an oppressive society dominated by men. Meda longs to be like her brothers – who can transform into creatures of the sky, the sea and the land, while she is trapped by a destiny that dictates she must remain forever at home. Until the day comes when she learns that women were once the holders of extraordinary powers. Along with her beloved, she embarks on an adventure to reclaim and restore what’s been kept from them for so long. Menna van Praag is the critically acclaimed author of The Sisters Grimm fantasy series.
Menna van Praag said: “Together with my magnificent agent, Laurie Robertson, I’ve been crafting this novel for a decade now and am delighted it’s finally found the perfect home and the perfect editor in Severn House and the brilliant Laurie Johnson.”
Laurie Johnson said: “I’m beyond excited to publish this sensational fantasy novel by the hugely talented Menna van Praag. Menna weaves a magical tale that’s full of action and adventure, romance with a hefty dose of spice and a strong female lead who dares to defy her subjugation and chase her dream.”
